Thought provoking post Charles. Marketers must certainly prepare themselves for a change.

Whether it is good for a business to treat marketing in its broadest sense as something that can be turned on and off at will, I would question. Outsource by all means, but to hire an interim manager just for the season feels too 'stop-start' to be truly effective.

You've prompted me to write my own post on the topic, which I hope you'll find of interest http://bit.ly/eJNZ0

Many time the "action" is below the radar because the CEO or Board are not eager to broadcast that an "interim exec" is in a key role. This fear of a scarlet letter is unfounded, but present just the same.

For additional insight into the challenges and constraints of using interim managers may I suggest picking up a copy of "Leadership On Demand: How Smart CEO's Tap Interim Management to Drive Revenue" by Besondy and Travis. Available in paperback and ebook through your favorite online reseller.

Completely agree that funneling is a great tool for getting teams to work together. I would disagree that all funnels are complex, particularly in SMEs where a simple approach can pay dividends immediately. Larger organisations will certainly need to approach with care and commitment. A quick overview of funnels for those just getting to grips with the concept can be found here: http://www.slideshare.net/clearthoughtconsulting/making-marketing-pay-1202609
